Selena Gomez reveals no immediate plans for new music
It looks like Selena Gomez fans might be waiting a while for her highly anticipated album, SG3, and a possible tour.
Ever since Selena first hinted at working on new music, her fans—affectionately known as Selenators—have been eagerly awaiting the release. Since her 2020 album Rare, Selena has treated us to a Spanish EP (Revelación) and a few standalone singles (“Single Soon,” “Love On”), but a full album remains elusive. Meanwhile, she’s been making waves in the acting world, starring in Only Murders in the Building.
Now, Selena has provided an update on her music, and it’s not the news fans were hoping for. In an interview with Variety ahead of the release of Only Murders in the Building Season 4, Selena revealed she has no immediate plans to release new music. She shared, “I’m in love with this [acting] right now. I’m enjoying this.”
This isn’t the first time Selena has hinted at stepping back from music. In a 2021 interview with Vogue, she mentioned, “I want to give [music] one last try before I maybe retire from music… [I want to] give myself a real shot at acting.”
During the SmartLess podcast in January, Selena confessed, “I never really intended on being a singer full-time, but apparently that hobby turned into something else. I don’t think I’m the best singer, but I do know how to tell stories.”
She later told Rolling Stone, “I love film. I love TV. I just feel like I have not done a lot of the things that I want to do in that space. It’s not ‘no, never’ [to music], it’s more that I would like to explore [acting] more.”
Despite putting her music career on pause, Selena did release “Single Soon” last August and followed up with “Love On” in February. However, she mentioned to Billboard that these tracks might not even make it onto SG3. “I would like to say that I am working towards an album. I feel like I’m brewing and I’m in the process of really creating some great songs, hopefully. I don’t know if they would fit with what I’m gonna go with,” she explained.
After wrapping up press for Only Murders in the Building Season 4, Selena is set to promote her award-winning film Emilia Pérez and the upcoming Wizards of Waverly Place spin-off, Wizards Beyond Waverly Place.
Whether Selena finishes SG3 after these projects or shifts her focus entirely to acting remains to be seen. However, with Selena set to portray Linda Ronstadt in an upcoming biopic, fans can at least look forward to some amazing covers on the soundtrack.
And whenever Selena is ready to drop another hit like “Bad Liar” or “Fetish,” we’ll be here, waiting!
